What to Do in the First 10 Minutes of an Earthquake

Every second counts. Know this before it happens.

⚠️

During Shaking: DROP · COVER · HOLD ON

The moment shaking starts — drop to your hands and knees, take cover under a sturdy table or desk (or against an interior wall), and hold on until shaking stops.

COMMON MISTAKE 🚫

Don't Run Outside

Most injuries happen when people run outside and get hit by falling glass, bricks, or façade pieces. Stay inside until shaking completely stops. Then assess.

DURING SHAKING 🪟

Stay Away From Windows

Glass shatters violently during earthquakes. Move away from windows, exterior walls, and heavy objects that could fall. Interior doorframes only protect in adobe homes — not modern construction.

AFTER SHAKING STOPS 🩺

Check Yourself First

Assess for injuries before moving. Shock masks pain — you might be hurt and not know it. Then check others around you. Provide first aid if trained.

CRITICAL STEP 💨

Check for Gas Leaks

Smell rotten eggs? Leave immediately — leave the door open, don't use electrical switches, and call the gas company from outside. A gas leak + spark = explosion.

COMMUNICATIONS 📱

Text, Don't Call

After a major earthquake, voice networks jam instantly. Text messages get through when calls can't. Use SMS to confirm you're safe. Save calls for true emergencies.

STAY ALERT 🔄

Expect Aftershocks

Aftershocks hit within minutes to days. They can be nearly as powerful as the main quake. Stay out of damaged buildings and away from unstable structures.

🎒

Locate Your Emergency Kit

If utilities are out, you'll need your kit. Know exactly where it is before disaster strikes.
