Start with the communications job you need to solve
The FlintReady communications stack
- 01
Primary: keep Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled, subscribe to local emergency-management alerts, and use normal calling or messaging while networks work.
- 02
Alternate: maintain a dedicated NOAA Weather Radio and at least one battery-powered broadcast receiver for official information.
- 03
Contingency: use a written household plan, out-of-area contact, meeting places, and short scheduled check-ins rather than improvised searching.
- 04
Emergency: add practiced local two-way radio or satellite messaging only when the use case, licensing, subscription, terrain, and sky view support it.
Four failure modes to plan around
Network congestion
A working tower can still be overloaded. Use short messages, avoid repeated calls, and preserve battery while waiting for delivery.
Power loss
Phones, routers, radios, and repeaters all need power. Store the correct cables, batteries, adapters, and charging sequence together.
Geography
Hills, dense buildings, valleys, tree cover, and indoor locations can defeat radio and satellite links that worked elsewhere.
Human confusion
Unknown channels, dead batteries, missing contact cards, and unpracticed procedures cause failures even when every device works.
Core communications references
Rules, plans, subscriptions, and specifications change. Follow current official instructions and the exact model manual.
