What the result means
The calculator multiplies people, days, and a user-selected daily calorie target. FDA uses 2,000 calories as a general nutrition-label reference, but individual needs vary with age, sex, height, weight, activity, pregnancy, lactation, and health.
This is an inventory-planning estimate, not a medical diet. Use your clinician’s guidance for diabetes, kidney disease, food allergies, swallowing needs, infant feeding, or other medical requirements.
Adjust the number before you buy
Physical work
Cleanup, evacuation, cold weather, and manual labor can increase energy needs beyond a quiet shelter-at-home day.
Children and older adults
Needs differ by age and activity. Count food that is familiar, tolerable, and realistically portioned for each person.
Medical diets
Track allergens, carbohydrate needs, sodium, texture, and medication-food interactions—not calories alone.
Preparation loss
Add a modest buffer for damaged packaging, appetite variation, sharing, and meals that do not work as planned.
Turn the estimate into an inventory
- 01
Write the target calories and meal count at the top of your pantry list.
- 02
Record calories for the entire container, not just one labeled serving.
- 03
Separate no-cook calories from foods requiring water, heat, or refrigeration.
- 04
Add the preparation water shown on every dehydrated or freeze-dried product label.
- 05
Run one test day using only the stored food and tools, then correct the plan.

Emergency food calculator FAQ
Why does the calculator default to 2,000 calories?
FDA uses 2,000 calories as a general nutrition-label reference. It is editable because individual energy needs can be higher or lower.
Should I count labeled servings or calories?
Use total calories as the primary energy measure. Labeled servings are useful for preparation and portioning but may not represent full meals.
Does the calculation include pets?
No. Make a separate food, water, medication, and feeding-equipment plan for every animal.
