Grid-down vehicle maintenance is about keeping your car running when professional repair is unavailable — no auto parts store, no mechanic, no tow truck. The goal is not to perform major repairs. It is to handle the 90% of problems that you can fix yourself IF you have the right basic knowledge and tools.

This is not about becoming a master mechanic. It is about five critical skills: changing a tire, jumping a battery, replacing a fuse, limping to safety on a damaged vehicle, and recognizing when a problem is beyond your ability to fix.

Limping a damaged vehicle

• ☐ OVERHEATING — slow down, turn on heat (pulls heat from engine), pull over, let cool
• ☐ DEAD BATTERY — jump-start, drive continuously for 30+ minutes to recharge
• ☐ LOW OIL — top off immediately if possible, drive slowly, get to shop
• ☐ FLAT TIRE — change on a level surface, away from traffic, use safety triangles
