05 / 08
๐ŸŒ€24 HOURS OUT
Warning active ยท final prep
  • โ˜ Run dishwasher, laundry, and bath appointments BEFORE the water goes
  • โ˜ Unplug sensitive electronics (except fridge) to protect from power surges
  • โ˜ Fill every container in the house with water: tubs, pots, kettles, buckets
  • โ˜ Put a cup of water in the freezer with a coin on top โ€” if the coin sinks, your freezer thawed
  • โ˜ Move irreplaceable items (photos, heirlooms, documents) to highest floor
  • โ˜ Raise furniture on blocks if flooding is possible, move rugs up
  • โ˜ Confirm meeting point and regroup plan with every household member
  • โ˜ Review the family emergency plan with children โ€” make it calm, not scary
  • โ˜ Check on elderly or medically dependent neighbors if safe to do so
  • โ˜ Charge ALL devices one final time to 100%
  • โ˜ Position all flashlights, lanterns, and radios in one accessible spot
  • โ˜ Know how to shut off water, gas, and electricity to your home
06 / 08
๐ŸŒŠLANDFALL WINDOW
6 hours out through the eye
  • โ˜ Stay inside, away from windows, in an interior room or hallway
  • โ˜ Keep NOAA radio on at all times โ€” you are the backup weather station
  • โ˜ Do NOT leave during the eye โ€” the second half of the storm is often worse
  • โ˜ Do NOT use candles โ€” fire risk is extreme during power outages (use flashlights)
  • โ˜ Shelter in the smallest room possible (bathroom or hallway) if winds exceed 80 mph
  • โ˜ Wear shoes โ€” broken glass is the #1 injury source during and after
  • โ˜ Keep phone charged, text instead of calling (texts use less battery)
  • โ˜ Document damage with video as it occurs (from safety) for insurance
  • โ˜ Check on family members in separate rooms every 15 minutes
  • โ˜ Keep car keys and go-bag in grabbing distance in case of sudden evacuation
  • โ˜ Listen for your out-of-area contact โ€” they have better info than local
  • โ˜ Do NOT drink tap water until officially cleared โ€” use stored or treated only
07 / 08
๐Ÿ› ๏ธAFTER THE STORM
First 72 hours post-landfall
  • โ˜ Wait for official "all clear" โ€” downed power lines are invisible at night
  • โ˜ Document ALL damage with photos and video before touching anything
  • โ˜ Contact insurance within 24-48 hours โ€” early claims process faster
  • โ˜ Do NOT drink tap water until the local utility confirms it is safe
  • โ˜ Do NOT run gasoline generators indoors or near windows (CO kills silently)
  • โ˜ Check on elderly and medically dependent neighbors if safe to reach them
  • โ˜ Avoid standing water โ€” electrical hazards, snakes, contamination
  • โ˜ Do NOT use candles โ€” emergency services are overloaded, fire is the #1 post-storm killer
  • โ˜ Clear paths around your house with work gloves and sturdy shoes
  • โ˜ Tarp any roof damage before the next rain (48 hours is common window) ย โ†’ Buy
  • โ˜ Save all receipts for lodging, food, repairs โ€” insurance covers many of them
  • โ˜ Check on your pets โ€” trauma affects them too, be patient
